Define Your Why: The First Step in Marketing Your Book

Start Here, Before Anything Else

Here's the truth nobody tells you when you decide to write a book: the most important marketing work happens before you ever think about covers, launch dates, or where to post about it.

It starts with one question. Why are you writing this book?

Not "why do people write books" in general. Why this one. Why now. Why you. Because when you can answer that with your whole heart, every decision that follows gets easier — and a whole lot more honest.

So before we talk tactics, let's talk about your why.

Your Why Becomes Your Compass

Think of your why as the compass for everything that comes next.

When you know exactly why this book exists, you stop second-guessing yourself. The cover? You'll know what feels right, because you know what/who the book is for. The words you use to describe it? They'll come from a real place. The readers you want to reach, the rooms you want to be in, the stories you tell about your book, all of it flows from this one piece of clarity.

Without it, marketing feels like throwing spaghetti at the wall. You chase every tactic, copy what other authors are doing, and wonder why none of it feels like you.

With it, marketing gets simple. Not always easy — but simple. You're not performing. You're just sharing something you already believe in. That's the difference your why makes.

Five Reasons Authors Write (Which One Is Yours?)

Most authors we work with have a why that lives in one or a few of these. Read through them and notice which ones make you sit up a little straighter.

  1. You have a story to tell. Something happened in your life, or you learned something the hard way, and you can't let it go untold. That story has been living in you for a while now, and it's finally time to put it on the page.

  2. You want to leverage your business. Your book is a calling card. It builds trust, opens doors, and positions you as the person who truly knows their stuff. It isn't just a book — it's the thing that grows what you've already built.

  3. You want this message in as many hands as possible. You're not writing for a single shelf. You have something to say that could shift how someone thinks, acts, or sees the world, and you want it to travel far.

  4. You're creating a legacy piece. This is the book your grandchildren will read. It captures your values, your voice, the adventures and the lessons you don't want lost to time. It's a gift to everyone who comes after you.

  5. You want to build an author career. This book is the first of many. You're stepping into a new identity, author, and you're here for the long game.

Maybe one of these jumped off the page. Maybe three did. There's no wrong answer here, and your why is allowed to hold more than one truth at once.

Name Your Why — A Quick Exercise

Here's the thing: clarity doesn't come from thinking about it. It comes from writing it down. So grab a notebook, pour something warm, and give yourself fifteen quiet minutes with these prompts:

  1. If this book reached only one person, who would you want it to be, and what would you want them to walk away with?

  2. What would you regret not saying if you never wrote it?

  3. When you picture holding the finished book in your hands, what's the feeling? Name it.

  4. Finish this sentence, out loud if you can: "I'm writing this book because ______."

Don't overthink your answers. Write down the first honest thing that comes, then keep going until you hit the line that gives you a little lump in your throat. That line is your why. Underline it. Come back to it every single time the marketing starts to feel like a lot.

Your Story, On Your Terms

Here's what we believe at Light of the Moon: your book is yours. Your voice, your vision, your rights, your story, start to finish. We're not here to polish you into someone more "marketable." We're here to help you share the real thing.

And the real thing starts with your why. Once you've named it, you've got the foundation for every marketing decision ahead, in your own words, from your own heart.

So do the work above first. Then, when you're ready to turn that clarity into a plan that carries your book out into the world, we'd love to walk alongside you.

Your story matters. Let's share it, authentically, and on your terms.
